Perkins Flat

Recognizing the importance of preserving open space, the Envirocare Environmental Foundation awarded a grant to Utah Open Lands to help preserve Perkins Flat. Emigration Canyon has a beauty and history which is unique. Home to the Mormon Pioneer Trail, the California Overland Trail and the Pony Express Route, these historic trails are now a designated scenic byway. Perkins Flat, over 190 acres of meadow and scrub Oak hillside, was slated for development, until a purchase agreement was negioated with the current owners by Utah Open Lands.

The undisturbed open meadow, which encompasses Emigration Creek affords an experience to view a scene which has been witnessed for over 150 years. Wetlands have long been recognized as a cleansing agent for streams. The wildlife values of the meadow include an active beaver dam, and moose, elk and deer habitat. Native Bonneville Cutthroat Trout have started to come back to the creek waters and a host of song birds and raptors utilize this rich meadow habitat.

A conservation easement protecting the land from future development will now be placed on the property and the land will be transferred to Salt Lake County for ownership.
