EnergySolutions Foundation Announces Distinguished Awards. Recipients in South Carolina, Idaho, and Tennessee
Three students to Receive Additional Awards of $2,500, $5,000 and $25,000
Salt Lake City, Utah - April 27, 2007 The EnergySolutions Foundation began the scholarship program in 2006 as a way to promote the, study of math, science, and engineering in college to help foster the next generation of professionals in these disciplines. All recipients were entered into a competition for three additional distinguished awards scholarship worth $2,500, $5,000 and $25,000.
The $2,500 distinguished award recipient was Matthew Brewer from South Aiken High School in Aiken, South Carolina. Matthew Brewer has a cumulative 4.26 GPA. He is enrolled in many honors classes including Honors Chemistry and Honors Algebra. He has won numerous awards including the Barbara Sharpe Math Award, Academic Excellence in Mathematics, Award for Character Excellence Award, and Second Place in his school science fair. He is also involved in marching band, symphonic band, Beta Club, and on the golf team. Matthew wants to pursue a degree in Engineering.
The $5,000 distinguished award recipient was Dane Sterbentz from Hillcrest High School in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Dane Sterbentz has a 4.0 cumulative GPA. He is ranked 1st in a class of 335. He is enrolled in many honors classes including Honors Biology and Honors Algebra and taking college classes in conjunction with Idaho State University. He is sophomore class president. He is also actively involved in Boy Scouts, church activities, peer counseling, debate, band, German Club, and swimming. Dane wants to pursue a degree in Nuclear Engineering, and work in the areas of nuclear reactor design or by helping to build nuclear power plants.
The $25,000 distinguished award recipient was Katherine Xue from Oak Ridge High School in Oakridge, Tennessee. Katherine Xue has a 4.0 cumulative GPA. She is enrolled in many honors classes including Honors English and Pre-Calculus, and is enrolled in AP Physics as well. She has won numerous awards for her science and math involvement including Tennessee Top Scorer for the National Mathcounts competition, 1st place at the Science Olympiad Nationals, and Reserve Champion in the Junior Division at the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair. She was also just accepted to the 2007 Tennessee Governor's School for the Sciences. She is involved with Wushu, Piano, International Relations Club, Future Problem Solving Team, Interact Club, the school literary magazine, Adopt a Grandparent and other service clubs. She would like to pursue a degree in either Math or Science.
"Our goal with the EnergySolutions Foundation scholarship program is to help these motivated students fulfill their desire of a college education," said Fraser Bullock, Chairman of the EnergySolutions Foundation Board. "We are pleased with the difference this will make in the educational future of these students," said Bullock.
