EnergySolutions Foundation Announced 3 Distinguished Award Recipients In Utah

Three students from 118 to Receive Additional Awards of $2,500, $5,000 and $25,000

Salt Lake City, Utah - April 27, 2007 Three Utah high school student will be able to worry a little less about paying for their college education. Heather Haderlie, a sophomore from Box Elder High School in Brigham City, is the top distinguished award scholarship recipient from the EnergySolutions Foundation. Haderlie was selected from the 118 individual high school honorees to be awarded an additional $25,000 merit-based scholarship to study math, science, or engineering in college.

The EnergySolutions Foundation began the scholarship program in 2006 as a way to promote the, study of math, science, and engineering in college to help foster the next generation of professionals in these disciplines. The scholarship was open to every high school in Utah with a $2,000 award. All recipients were entered into a competition for three additional distinguished awards scholarship worth $2,500, $5,000 and $25,000.

Haderlie has a cumulative GPA of 4.0 and ranks first in a class of 508. In addition to taking honors and AP classes, she is very involved with her school as Student Government President, Spanish Club Vice President, and editor and reporter for the school newspaper. She is a Spanish tutor, a member of the National Jr. Honor Society where she received the Rocky Mountain Talent Search award for academics and the Historian for the Future Business Leaders of America at Box Elder High. Haderlie also won the Hugh O' Brian Leadership Outstanding Sophomore Award. Haderlie wants to pursue a career in chemical and biotechnology engineering.

The second distinguished award of an additional $5,000 scholarship has been awarded to Morgan Torgerson from Wayne High School in Bicknell, Utah. Torgerson maintains a 3.9 cumulative GPA, and is involved with the National Honor Society, Future Farmers of America and Heath Occupation Students of America. She is the Secretary for the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. She has participated in regional and state competitions, winning silver medals at both competitions. She also plays volleyball and basketball.

The third distinguished award recipient is Julie Andrus from Snow Canyon High School in St. George, Utah. Andrus will receive an additional $2,500 scholarship from the EnergySolutions Foundation. Andrus is ranked first in her class of 416 students and maintains a 4.0 GPA. She is in honors classes and a year ahead in math, taking pre-calculus. She is also enrolled in AP chemistry and calculus for next year. She is also involved with high school soccer and basketball. She wants to pursue a career as a forensic chemist.

"Our goal with the EnergySolutions Foundation scholarship program is to help these motivated students fulfill their desire of a college education," said Fraser Bullock, Chairman of the EnergySolutions Foundation Board. "We are pleased with the difference this will make in the educational future of these students," said Bullock.

The EnergySolutions Foundation will honor these distinguished award recipients, as well as all of the scholarship recipients at a banquet on April 27th. The Foundation received applications from over 700 students from 118 high schools across Utah.
